It is told in the present as well as in flashbacks, as Colin makes sense of his current and past situations. It has 19 chapters, which connects to the 19 Katherines Colin dates. By doing so, it avoids going deep into Colin’s mind, but still focuses on his thoughts and his perspective. For this reason, Green chose to write the novel in third person, so readers would be able to read an effective story. Colin is a child prodigy, and has a unique mind filled with knowledge that most people do not care about. However, the writing style does have meaning that allows the reader to better understand the main character, Colin. The plot of the story, the characters, and the themes tied into it are most important to the meaning of the novel. Is the author’s emphasis on how he writes more important than what he says, or is there a meaningful and artistic fusion of style and content?
